PEORIA, Ill. (AP) -- More than 200 military technicians with the 182nd Airlift Wing in Peoria were forced to take Friday off without pay.
Lt. Col. Steve Thomas tells the Journal Star (http://bit.ly/12tCLRf) that the technicians' furlough started Friday. They will take off one day a week until September. The reduction is due to federal budget cuts.
Major Brad Leighton with the Illinois National Guard says about 1,200 people statewide are affected by the budget cuts. It amounts to a 20 percent cut in pay.
Thomas says the cuts mean the wing's "mission capability is obviously reduced." He says the technicians work in aircraft maintenance and prepare the base for monthly drills.
