CHICAGO (AP) -- Federal officials say more than 217,000 Illinois residents chose health plans in the new insurance marketplace under President Barack Obama's health care law.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released final enrollment numbers Thursday. The final tally for Illinois exceeded by more than 70,000 the Obama administration's original goal of 143,000 enrollees by the end of the enrollment period that closed March 31.
The federal report also shows Hispanics represent 9.5 percent of the Illinois enrollees who volunteered their race or ethnicity. Hispanics are the state's largest ethnic group, making up about 16 percent of the population.
In Illinois, an additional 287,000 have enrolled in expanded Medicaid coverage.
