Illinois 40 Bridge Replacement Opens

ROCK FALLS (WIFR) -- A modernized bridge over the Rock River between Sterling and Rock Falls is open.

The $27 million bridge on Illinois 40 provides two traffic lanes in each direction and recreational paths for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Gov. Pat Quinn and other state and local officials cut the ribbon on the bridge Monday.

The primary connection between the two northern Illinois cities carries an average of 26,000 vehicles a day.

The project was paid for with federal, state and local funds.

The Illinois Department of Transportation recycled concrete from the old bridge and provided its beams and piers to the city of Rock Falls to use in building a recreational riverfront park.
