Ice on Stateline Roads Cause Major Traffic Tie-Ups

STATELINE (WIFR) -- Icy roads cause hundreds of accidents around the Stateline with many drivers ending up in ditches on and several roads were impassable for hours.

In Boone County, the west bound lane of Route 173 was blocked for more than an hour after a semi slid off the road. Drivers were stuck on Route 2 in Ogle County for more than an hour because of a 40 car pileup near Castle Rock. Officers in Stephenson and Winnebago counties report ice on nearly every roadway, especially residential roads. School buses were reportedly stuck along many Rockford streets for several hours. Fender benders and cars in ditches were reported all Friday evening, fortunately, no one was seriously hurt in any of them. Some drivers still had to get to work but were taking it slow.

Law enforcement agencies are asking drivers to stay home and only venture out in an emergency. The Illinois State police is working with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to rescue stranded motorists with snowmobiles, ATV's, and four wheel drive vehicles. Until the ice melts, tow truck drivers are unable to respond to many spots because of icy road conditions, meaning many of those cars might not get rescued until the morning.
