Ice Cream Social Connects Neighbors with Local Shops

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Small business owners in Winnebago County help neighbors celebrate National Ice Cream Day.

The group Winnebago Buy Local held their second annual Totally Local Ice Cream Social on Sunday. The Dairy Haus in Rockton supplied the ice cream and representatives from 26 local shops handed out toppings. The Lombardi Club hosted the free event. Organizers say it's all about reminding us to shop locally and not always at the big box stores.

“Buying local brings more money into the economy overall. It gives our community a sense of pride and ownership. It builds stronger communities when people know their business owners and know the places they live and can take pride in those places,” says Lauren Davis of Winnebago Buy Local.

The Totally Local Ice Cream Social also brought in donations of school supplies to benefit Rock House Kids.
