Hundreds of Pills Dropped Off at Medication Collection Drive

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Thousands of pills are now in the process of being safely disposed of so they don't get in the wrong hands.

Volunteers from Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful collected unused and expired medication Saturday in Machesney Park, South Beloit, and Belvidere.

They took everything from over the counter medicine, to pills for our pets, and even inhalers and thermometers. Experts say this is the safest way to get rid of all those old pills in our medicine cabinets. They say flushing medicine down the toilet could contaminate our drinking water.

"Even medications in the landfill can leech into the water and we're attempting to keep our water, for drinking water and for our plants and animals, healthy and clean," Ann Marie Santora, from Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful, said.

You can also drop off medication at the South Beloit Police Department during regular business hours.
