Homeowners Get Financial Help Before Foreclosure

Illinois has one of the highest foreclosure rates in the nation, and Rockford comes in at number eight on that list. And now some struggling families are getting financial help to make sure they stay in their homes.

It's all part of the Keep Your Home, Illinois initiative by the Illinois Housing Development Authority.

More than 2,300 Rockford homes are in some stage of foreclosure. So homeowners are able to meet with a housing counselor and get legal advice, for free. That's a service Blanca Vallejo took advantage when she lost her job and struggled to make her mortgage payments.

"I just wish people that are in similar situations would reach out and get the help they need. i believe your home is your biggest investment and if you have children you want to have a home for your children," Vallejo says.

If you need assistance.. you can apply for help through the Illinois Hardest Hit Program you can visit or call their hotline during the week at (855) 533-7411.
