WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) -- Starting a small business from the home is a sign of the times, but when it comes to signs promoting the business local government is saying no.
Scott Theroux lost his job three years ago, not more than 24 hours later his fiancee lost her job. After spending more than 25 years in the construction business and needing a job to survive. Theroux decided to start building furniture from his garage.
business has been booming but Winnebago County officials have been looming. Theroux says he's been ordered to take down his sign and he's not allowed to expand on his property.
"People are coming up with ideas on how to survive. Instead of stifling them. Instead of telling them no you can't do this you can't do that. Why don't they encourage them and say hey here's an old building why don't you slide in there. No taxes or no rent or something for a while until you get established," Theroux said.
