STATELINE (WIFR) -- A lot of us will be hitting the road for the three day weekend. In fact, there will be more of us traveling this Labor Day than there has been since the recession started.
AAA expects nearly two million cars on the road just here in Illinois. But with all the extra travelers, there will also be extra troopers.
Illinois State Police District 16 troopers were already out this afternoon, checking for speeders and helping stranded motorists.
While we were out with them, it only took about 10 minutes to find a speeder going 78 in a 65.
The idea isn't to ruin our weekend with a speeding ticket, officers say it's all about making sure our weekend isn't ruined by an accident.
"Labor Day weekend last year we had 14 fatality related crashes in Illinois. 42% of those involved alcohol, so we want to minimize. Our goal is zero so we'd love to make it through the weekend with no one losing their life on our interstate and our roadways in Illinois," says Master Sgt. Carl Heintz.
And there is a lot of construction happening all along I-90. The Illinois Department of Transportation is giving us a break today through Monday, opening as many lanes as possible in those construction areas.
Last year Illinois State Police handed out 2,600 speeding tickets and made 90 DUI arrests. Tonight there will be six extra troopers in our area working on a special DUI enforcement.
