ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Two of downtown Rockford’s oldest churches will become one this weekend. Second Congregational United Church of Christ will merge with First Presbyterian. Both parishes have seen their memberships decline over the past few years. As you probably recall, First Presbyterian actually sold their historic building on North Main earlier this year, which is why Second Congregational is opening their doors to a new congregation. Reverends Solberg and Wagner will both preside over the church. Reverend Wagner tells us there's a lot of mixed feelings, but Second Congregational has welcomed them with open arms.
"It has just been so wonderful. We have worshipped a couple of times since we made the decision to join them in worship, and every time they have just been so gracious, and the hospitality has been amazing,” said Reverend Beth Wagner.
This Sunday will mark the first joint service. Members of the First Presbyterian will begin their worship at their old location on main, before “processing” to Second Congregational’s location on Church.
