FREEPORT — The northwest Illinois community and friends of Highland Community College are invited to join the 2013 graduates and their families as they celebrate the 50th annual Commencement Ceremony to be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2013.

This special 50th Commencement celebration will include the participation of remaining founding Highland Trustee Delbert Scheider, seven of the 16 graduates from Freeport Community College’s inaugural commencement ceremony, and several staff members serving at the time of the institution’s first graduation.

The address to the class of 2013 will be given by Dr. David H. Ponitz, Superintendent of Freeport School District at the time of Freeport Community College’s founding and president of FCC from 1962 to 1965. Dr. Ponitz is currently President Emeritus of Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio, where he served as acting president from 1975 to 1997. In 2009, he founded the David H. Ponitz Career Technology Center, a secondary school in the Dayton Public School System.

Dr. Ponitz received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan in 1952. This was followed by more studies at the University of Michigan and completion of a master’s program in 1954. Dr. Ponitz went on to receive his Doctorate in Education from Harvard University in 1964.

The ceremony will be held outdoors on the beautiful HCC campus in Freeport. Commencement will take place in the plaza between the Marvin-Burt Liberal Arts Center and Natural Science and Health Center. Guest parking will be located in parking lot D on the south side of campus outside of the Natural Science and Health Center.

The college is expecting a large number of participating graduates as such seating will be limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the Larry F. Kahl Gymnasium located in the YMCA Sports Center on Highland's Freeport campus. Due to the large number of graduates, tickets will be required to attend the ceremony if held in the Sports Center.
