Heroin Task Force Searching for Solutions

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Heroin use is a growing problem in the Stateline, particularly among teens and young adults.

According to the Winnebago County Coroner's Office, 125 people died last year from drug overdoses.

Now, a heroin task force is looking at ways to put an end to what's being called a state-wide medical emergency.

Today was one of a number of hearings held statewide to address heroin use among our youth.

Lawmakers are hearing testimony from users and dealers along with law enforcement officials who are trying to catch heroin addicts and put them behind bars.

Politicians hope to take all that information and pass legislation to stop heroin use before the drug takes any more young lives.

"The state has got to do a better job of educating our children to stay away from prescription drugs," said State Representative John Cabello. "It sounds like that's the start for heroin, prescription drugs."

Today's hearing was hosted by the Young Adults Heroin Use Task Force, which was created last year.
