CHERRY VALLEY (WIFR) -- There aren't any signs of Spring quite yet, but hardware stores are transitioning from their winter supplies to their warmer weather goods. Some local hardware stores are even running low, or entirely running out of our basic snow necessities like shovels and salt.
"I was looking for salt and they didn't have any for a couple days."
Ashley Stallworth isn't alone in her quest to find salt. This very cold and snow winter has been causing salt to fly off the shelves faster than stores can keep it on. The Cherry Valley Menard's General Manager, Karen Gashi, says salt has been the hardest to stock.
"Our biggest struggle has definitely been salt. I think that's certainly area wide and industry wide," says Menard's General Manager Karen Gashi.
Employees at the Farm and Fleet in Loves Park say they've been out of salt and shovels for about a week. Other places like the Home Depot in Rockford say they're down to just a handful of shovels and recently sold out of snow blowers.
Outside isn't showing signs of winter slowing down anytime soon. However, Menard's and other hardware stores are beginning to get in their Spring shipments, including outdoor patio furniture and mulch. Gashi says the snow isn't stopping people from preparing for the warmer weather.
"I was surprised by the people coming in to buy mulch this weekend."
Luckily, the Spring shipments mean the winter supplies are now going on sale, with the few things that are still left.
