ROCKFORD (WIFR) – Organizers for the Rockford Marathon have had a change of heart. The run will go on despite earlier claims that a lack of sponsors would mean the end of the race in 2014.
The race will take place the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend, May 25th, but there will be no full marathon, just a half marathon and 10K event. Organizers say that more businesses need to support the race in order for there to be a full event. 1,200 runners from 20 states participated in the three races with the full marathon seeing the fewest number of people.
"We didn't want to let the event just go away. We know we need to get more support from the business community; we have some for this year. Certainly we wanted to provide a good event for the runners in the community so we thought coming back with the half and the 10K was a solution for this year,” said organizer Steve Korn.
Registration is now open on Rockfordhalfmarathon.com with early bird sign-up lasting through April 20th. The half marathon is $55 with the 10K setting you back $35. Organizers say they are confident there will be a full marathon in 2015.
