HCC Servant Leadership Program in Need of Donations and Volunteers

By  |

FREEPORT — The Highland Community College Servant Leadership program is looking for monetary donations and volunteers for their “Hearts and Hands for Hunger” campaign. The meal packing days will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 4 and 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 5, at the HCC Student/Conference Center, Room, H-201. Donations will be taken through April 1.

Area high school students participating in the Highland Community College Servant-Leadership program are continuing the campaign to help feed children who are hungry. The past four years, Servant Leaders have been able to provide more than 185,000 meals for the children in Haiti and to other children around the world.

They are once again partnering with the organization “Kids Around the World” from Rockford, IL. The goal this year is to feed 60,000 children. For only 25 cents, a meal can feed a child.

This year, multi-colored short sleeve and long-sleeve T-shirts are being sold for as a part of the fundraising effort. Each short sleeve shirt will provide 24 meals, and a long sleeve T-shirt will provide 32 meals. Custom designed banners will be sold for $20, and with a $100 donation, this can provide 400 meals for children.

A goal is set how many children Servant Leaders want to feed. They raise support and money to purchase the raw materials. “Kids Around the World” brings the materials and supplies that are needed. Volunteers come together and package the meals. It is a great, hands-on way to get people directly involved in the process of feeding starving children all over the world. “Kids Around the World” then ships and distributes the meals

The food packaged is a rice and soy mix fortified with 21 vitamins and minerals, six dehydrated vegetables and chicken flavoring. The nutrient meal reverses the starvation process and its effects.

Those interested in donating or assisting in the effort should contact High School Servant-Leadership Coordinator Kim Pool at kim.pool@highland.edu or call 815.599.3574. More information is available at highland.edu. Mailed donations should be made payable to Highland Community College Servant-Leadership Hearts and Hands For Hunger and sent to: Kim Pool, Highland Community College, 2998 W. Pearl City Road, Freeport, IL 61032
