ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The Rockford School Board tonight agreed to hire Ringland Johnson Construction to build the 56,000 square-foot field house at Guilford High School. Seven vendors submitted bids to construct the field house, which includes a 160-meter track with three basketball courts, a new entrance to the school's swimming pool, a weight room, concession stand area, storage space and athletic offices. The existing weight room will be converted into much-needed classroom space. The work includes LED lighting and terrazzo flooring.

Administrators expect construction to begin in the early spring, depending on weather. Prep work at the site is already underway. Project completion is expected in October.

The bid totals, including alternates, were as follows, with Ringland Johnson submitting the lowest bid at $8.52 million: Sjostrom & Sons: $9.83 million Corporate Construction Inc.: $9.26 million Scandroli Construction: $9.19 million Cord Construction: $8.97 million Stenstrom Construction: $8.83 million Vissering Construction Company: $8.71 million Ringland Johnson: $8.52 million

Other work approved tonight:

-Rock Valley Glass was hired for window replacement work at Guilford. The company submitted the lowest bid of $1.37 million. The other bidder was Cardinal Glass, which submitted a bid of $1.67 million.

-Nelson Carlson Mechanical Contractors was hired to remove and replace three boilers at East High School. The company submitted the lowest responsible bid of $2.35 million, compared to Mechanical Inc.'s bid of $2.75 million. A third bidder, Commercial Mechanical Inc., was deemed nonresponsive.

Much of the work awarded tonight will be funded through a successful $139 million capital bond referendum, which voters approved in November 2012. These plans are detailed in the district's 10-year Facilities Master Plan. Also under that plan, a construction of a field house is underway at Auburn High School, and school additions are near completion at Conklin, Froberg, Johnson, Lathrop, McIntosh and Spring Creek elementary schools.
