ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The clock is ticking for the Schnucks on Rural Street and many of its customers are pleading with the Midwestern grocery store chain to keep its doors open.
The group S.O.S., or Save Our Store, stood outside the Schnucks Saturday morning looking to build awareness and support for the 57-year-old store front.
Many held signs and chanted in unison, but it may be falling on deaf ears.
Schnucks has a no compete clause after it leaves, which will not allow another grocery store to move in.
The group, however, is open to other ideas.
"We would really like them to allow another grocer, a small independent grocer to come in and keep serving our community as the anchor of our community, which this store has been," said regular customer Leslie Roxworthy. "If they even have to knock this building down and make it a big, green, beautiful space with a community garden, I think we can find enough people to support that."
Both the store on Rural and the one on South Alpine Road are set to close on May 31st.
