BELVIDERE (WIFR) -- After years of controversy a Belvidere church has set in motion it's plan to nearly triple in size.
St. James Catholic Church broke ground Monday on it's new addition. When it's done 850 people will be able to go to mass there at the same time. A Belvidere church is starting to build an addition after waiting for years. Some neighbors were concerned that expanding the church would create parking and noise headaches but Bishop David Malloy says the expansion is a blessing.
"It brings people together. It's a part of life, It's a part of our faith and for a community like Belvidere its part of the history and the culture of the community itself so it has so many elements of importance to it," Malloy said.
Construction is expected to be complete by thanksgiving.
