CHICAGO (AP) -- Republican candidate for Illinois governor Bruce Rauner says he raised more than $9 million in the first three months of the year.

Rauner's campaign released its first-quarter fundraising total on Tuesday. The release came ahead of a midnight deadline for candidates to file full campaign finance reports with the state.

Rauner defeated three GOP rivals to win the March primary. The wealthy businessman from Winnetka faces Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn in November.

Quinn's campaign had not released its fundraising totals or filed its quarterly report as of mid-afternoon Tuesday.

Rauner's fundraising total includes millions of his own money. But his campaign says he's received more than 6,900 individual donations since he announced his bid last year.

The campaign says Rauner carried more than $1.3 million into the second quarter.
