ROCKFORD (WIFR) – There’s a new plan in the works to deal with an old hotel that’s been sitting vacant in south west Rockford for the last four years. A private developer is interested in taking over the former Pump Handle Inn and the Rockford City Council is going over their proposal tonight.
Members of the Planning and Development Committee just sat down to discuss a potential development agreement for the old Pump Handle Inn, one that could result in the demolition of what’s left of the former hotel.
It was condemned in 2009 after the city found a number of code violations. The building is owned by a private holding company that’s still on the hook for more than $400,000 in fines from those code violations. According to the city, Stenstrom and Clark Developers wants to buy the dilapidated building. The proposal being discussed tonight would reduce those fines, if what remains of the Pump Handle is torn down. Neighbors near the site have some suggestions for that future development.
“I'd love to see them tear all of this down and get rid of the piles and piles of dirt and create something nice. A park would be nice,” said Pam Danielson who lives behind the former hotel.
Also this evening, the public is invited to come and give input on the city’s 2014 budget. The comment session will kick off tonight’s City Council Meeting. The meeting begins at 6 p.m.
