Freeport Police Investigating June Death

FREEPORT (WIFR) -- On June 17, 2012 at approximately 4:42 a.m. the Freeport Police were called to the 1300 block of South Walnut Avenue in reference to a man down in the street.

Upon arrival officers found 33-year-old Jimmy Whitehead lying in the roadway with serious head injuries. An ambulance was also dispatched to the scene and Mr. Whitehead was taken to the Emergency Room at FHN and later transferred to Rockford. Mr. Whitehead passed away as a result of his injuries. The scene was secured and the investigation began with assistance from the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Investigations division.

The facts of this investigation reveal that Mr. Whitehead 1) was with friends and family members attending a bachelor celebration 2) traveled out of town arriving back at a relative’s home in the 1300 block of S. Walnut somewhere between 3:00 a.m. and 3:30am. The investigation shows that Mr. Whitehead at some point was struck by a vehicle in the roadway Mr. Whitehead remained in this location until the police arrived on scene.

Police believe that given the lighting conditions and other factors, it is possible that the driver of that vehicle may not have seen or realized what they struck.
