FREEPORT (WIFR) – Abandoned homes keep coming down in Freeport. The city is working fast, so far demolishing more than a dozen homes since September.
In those six months, Freeport has demolished 17 homes. Community groups, the mayor, and people living in the Pretzel City have long been asking for money to be put aside to address some of the blight.
There are a number of homes in Freeport that stand unattended and are no longer safe enough to live in.
“A lot of these are dangerous and unsafe. Nobody should be around these buildings. They should be taken down as soon as possible so we work through the legal aspects of this as quickly as we can and take care of them in progression that I think has been pretty consistent,” said Shawn Gallagher with the City of Freeport.
Freeport city leaders say as soon as the weather warms up, four more homes will be demolished. The land will then be reassessed and the city will work to sell each plot.
