FREEPORT (WIFR) – This winter seems like it just won’t let up which has left one local monument covered in snow.
Veterans and volunteers with shovels in hand spent the morning uncovering the civil war monument in Freeport.
The memorial was buried by mother nature but it was county workers who plowed snow on top of it. A conservation group recently raised $80,000 for repairs on the 146-year-old statue and seeing a mound of salt and snow blanketed over it, left people very upset.
"It's a slap in the face. We're all offended so neglect after we just put a brand new foundation in the spring of $35,000 so I'm proud of the veterans and the people we had here to come down,” said group leader Ron Werntz.
The monument’s foundation was installed in the fall and renovations are expected to continue in the spring.
