Former Gov. Ryan to Speak at Mandela Memorial

CHICAGO (AP) -- Former Illinois Gov. George Ryan is expected to speak at a memorial service for the late South African leader Nelson Mandela.

Debra Johnson is a spokeswoman for U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush, whose Chicago church is holding the Sunday service.

Johnson says Ryan plans to address attendees at Beloved Community Christian Church of God in Christ.

Nation of Islam Leader Louis Farrakhan also is among those scheduled to speak at what's described as a celebration of Mandela's multicultural and multiethnic inclusivity.

It will be one of the first public speaking engagements for Ryan since he was released from prison after serving 5 1/2 years for a corruption conviction.

Ryan met with Mandela during a trip to South Africa in 2000, when Ryan was governor.

Mandela died last week at age 95.
