Flood Impacted Areas Eligible for State Help

STATELINE (WIFR) -- The flooding has been so bad across the Stateline, Governor Pat Quinn has declared many counties a disaster area. Six Stateline Counties remain under a state of emergency since Governor Quinn made the proclamation on April 18th.

Those counties include Carroll, DeKalb, Ogle, Whiteside and Winnebago Counties. This has allowed those areas most impacted by the high waters to be eligible for state help with areas severely damaged also eligible for reassessment. A property owner can submit an application for a reassessment of any taxable property in a county which was substantially damaged by our current flooding. This doesn’t mean your assessment is going to disappear, but could decrease it for the rest of the year.

"The assessment then will be pro-rated from the date of the proclamation for the rest of the year at that lower value,” said Thomas Walsh, Winnebago County Supervisor of Assessments. “It will not be that lower value for the whole year but rather just the portion after the proclamation."

Township assessors are already out doing tours of the area to get an idea on the impact and compensation that will be given. Reassessment forms can be picked up from your county assessor’s office. In Winnebago County you can also complete the form online.
