UPDATE 3/12: A Stateline staple is already starting to rebuild after flames erupted during dinner.
The owners of Cannova's Pizzeria in Freeport took a tour today to assess the damage. A fire broke out around 7:00 Friday night. Fortunately, no one was hurt and we're told workers and firefighters were able to keep the fire contained in the kitchen. While it'll take months to completely rebuild the two owners say they're grateful for the support they've gotten on Facebook.
The owners tell us they're planning on moving some of the restaurant's most popular dishes next door to the Fieldstone.
FREEPORT (WIFR) -- For 91 years, Cannova's Pizzeria has made it's home in Freeport and Friday night, restaurant’s owners and customers were sent fleeing from the building after it went up in flames.
Just before 7 o'clock tonight, the Freeport Fire Department responded to a fire at the Italian restaurant. Approximately 25 firefighters were called in to fight the blaze. The two story building withstood fire damage on both floors. One person was taken to the hospital for possible smoke inhalation. The total cost of the damage to Cannova's is unknown at this time.
"We recieved an alarm for what we think started out as a kitchen fire. Initial firefighters on scene were met with heavy fire and smoke conditions. There's a crawl space in there that some of the fire got to...there's also some pipe chases that allowed it to get up into the attic area”, says Freeport Fire Chief Kevin Countryman.
Cannova's owners say more than 100 people were in the restaurant at the time of the fire and credit the fire department for their efforts in putting out the blaze before more damage was done.
Owners say the restaurant is insured and the policy should cover the damage that was done by the flames.
