ROCKFORD (WIFR) – According to the National Fire Prevention Association, almost two-thirds (62%) of reported home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in reported home fires in half.
In response to this, Batteries Plus is partnering with the Cherry Valley Fire Department to host a Fire Prevention Event. The event will be held on Saturday, October 12 from 1 to 4 pm at the Rockford store located at 1825 S. Perryville Road. The event coordinates with National Fire Prevention Week that runs October 6th through October 12th. As part of the event, Batteries Plus will be giving out FREE 9 volt batteries to encourage the public to change the batteries in their smoke detectors and save lives. The fire department will be present with a fire truck and to answer safety questions.
The public is encouraged to stop by and bring their kids to enjoy the afternoon of activities and sign up for free drawings.
Safety of the community is important to Batteries Plus. Most fatal fires kill one or two people. In 2011, 12 home fires killed five or more people resulting in a total of 67 deaths. By holding this event, we are working to improve the lives of this community.
