UPDATE: Illinois State Police told us Tuesday the stop sign had been recovered in a field nearby showing signs of weather damage.
After further investigation, we’re told the stop sign was never found and the original report was due to a miscommunication between Illinois State Police and Stephenson County earlier this week. The missing stop sign has since been replaced, however authorities don’t know what happened to the old sign.
UPDATE: Polo High School is mourning the loss of English Teacher, Sarah Kamp. 32-year-old Kamp died from injuries suffered in a crash in Stephenson County on Monday.
The Stephenson County Highway Department says strong winds carried off a stop sign outside German Valley causing the deadly crash Monday morning.
Kamp drove west through the intersection of Montague and Rock City Roads, not realizing there is typically a stop sign there. The Polo High School Teacher crashed into the northbound driver and died from her injuries. We're told the stop sign was reported about 10 minutes before the crash. The sign as since been replaced.
Kamp started teaching August 2004 and taught Sophomore and Senior English at Polo High School. Kamp also published the school newsletter each month and was the Sophomore class sponsor and Sponsor of the National Honor Society.
She married Polo High School Physics and Chemistry teacher Jason Kamp, and was also a mother to 21-month-old son, Nathan.
UPDATE - A Byron woman died after a car crash in Stephenson County Monday morning.
32-year-old Sarah Kamp died from injuries suffered in the crash after being taken by helicopter to St. Anthony's Hospital.
According to Illinois State Police, Kamp was driving west on Montague Road at about 7 a.m. when she went drove through the intersection at Rock City Road, where a stop sign was missing.
The crash remains under investigation.
STEPHENSON COUNTY (WIFR) -- A missing stop sign is to blame for a fatal accident in Stephenson County.
Illinois State Police say a silver Toyota was headed Westbound on Montague Road around 7 a.m. this morning. When the driver came to the intersection of Rock City Road she didn't realize there was normally a stop sign there and crashed into a white Saturn headed north.
The driver of the Toyota died as a result of her injuries. The victim's name hasn't been released but we're told she was a teacher at Polo High School.
The women in the other car are expected to be alright.
