UPDATE: FHN Memorial Hospital Lifts Flu Season Visitor Restrictions

UPDATE: FREEPORT — FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport has lifted its flu-season restricted visitor policy.

During this year’s heightened flu season, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) asked healthcare organizations to adhere to a stricter-than-usual visitor policy to help stop the spread of influenza.

Effective immediately, FHN Memorial Hospital is operating under its standard visitor restrictions, enacted to protect patients and visitors and staff throughout the year:

• Visiting hours are from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Exceptions may apply in OB, Pediatrics and the Women and Children's Unit, although that should not be assumed. Please speak to your nurse or the unit's nursing supervisor regarding exceptions.
• All children must be in the company of a responsible adult and may not be left unattended. Children under six years of age may be admitted as visitors only to the Women and Children's Unit and the Birthing Center when that room is private.
• Persons with obvious signs of infection should not visit the hospital. Please do not visit the hospital if you have a fever, sore throat, cough, runny nose or congestion, upset stomach or are vomiting.
• Please do not use patient bathrooms during your visit; public rest rooms are located throughout the building.
• Please check with nursing staff before bringing in food, personal items or flowers. Restriction of these items may be an important part of the patient's care.
• Some patients in the hospital are very ill and we strive for a quiet, healing environment. Please be considerate of roommates and other patients.
• We are very respectful of our patients' privacy, so you may be asked to step out during provider consultations or while treatments are being given.
• Disruptive and inappropriate behavior can result in visitors being asked to leave.
• All visitors must check in at the Visitor desk in the hospital atrium (east entrance). Visitors who are visiting a patient (floors 2 - 5) must sign in and receive a badge, which must be returned to the atrium desk before signing out and leaving the hospital. Visitors to the hospital gift shop, Fresh Inspirations Café, imaging department and other areas on the first floor or lower level of the hospital must check in but will not need a badge.

FREEPORT (WIFR) -- During this heightened flu season, FHN is implementing the following visitor restrictions from the Illinois Department of Health (IDPH) for visitors’ health and safety as well as that of patients and staff:

• No visitors under age 18.
• Only two (2) visitors per patient at one time.
• Visitors with fever, cough, or sore throat should NOT visit. If they MUST, masks are required (and will be provided).
• Patients hospitalized for flu may have visitors ONLY when necessary for emotional well-being or care.
• Respiratory hygiene/cough etiquette (cover coughs, tissue disposal immediately after use, hand sanitizer) MUST be followed at all times.

These restrictions apply to ALL hospital patients, including OB and Pediatrics – please check with the nurse on duty there if there are any questions.

All medical services remain available to patients of all ages throughout FHN.

“These restrictions are an extension of our current visitor policy, which we enacted to protect our patients and their families as well as our staff throughout the year,” said FHN Infectious Disease Specialist and Vice President of Medical Affairs Robert Geller, MD, MS, FACP, FIDSA.

“We would also like to remind people of all ages that proper handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes and staying home if you feel ill are the best ways to prevent the spread of flu,” Dr. Geller said.
