ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- An intense explosion shakes a Rockford neighborhood and blows out part of an outside wall at a home on the city's south east side.
The blast happened just before 2:30pm Sunday at a home in the 2900 block of Marshall Street. No one was inside at the time. The blast ripped a significant hole through the back of the house and shattered several windows. One neighbor says he first thought it was a car crash.
"I heard a whoosh and a tinkle of glass. Then I ran out and saw the windows blown out and the smoke. I walked by the meter and I heard the gas flowing through it. I thought right away something has to be done so I ran across the street and got pliers and shut it off," says Daniel Rosene.
Fire investigators say they are still looking into the cause but say a water heater may be to blame. The explosion caused an estimated $15,000 in damage.
