Ethnic Heritage Museum Honors Black Fraternities

In recognition of Black History Month, one local museum is honoring African American scholars.

The Ethnic Heritage Museum debuted a new exhibit today to recognize the history of Black fraternities. The exhibit featured relics from the Black Masons, Eastern Star, and Blackhawk Elk organizations.

Exhibit organizer David Ruffin said black fraternal organizations play a big role in helping their communities.

"Through scholarships, through educational programs, through community service, they're just here to help," said Ruffin. "To make the life better for its citizens."

The exhibit also pays tribute to one of the founders of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity who is buried in Rockford, and the one hundredth anniversary of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority.
