UPDATE: ROCKFORD (WIFR) – A Stateline doctor accused of sexually abusing elderly patients to the point to tears is now out on bond. Dr. Charles Dehaan is facing serious federal charges that could land him in prison for those complaints and Medicare fraud.

Today’s hearing was for a separate issue than the alleged sexual abuse.

Federal prosecutors say the doctor submitted false claims to Medicare, scamming the government, but Dehaan who recently had his medical license temporarily suspended after allegations that he sexually abused patients, is now out on bond and will be going home tonight.

However, there are restrictions on what Dehaan can do while he’s out awaiting trial. He can travel through Northern Illinois, Northern Indiana and Western Michigan, that’s because his mother lives in Michigan and suffers from medical illnesses and he’ll be allowed to visit her as needed, but he cannot travel anywhere else. He also can’t speak to witnesses or potential witnesses in either case and it seems like Dehaan will fight all the allegations.

"We will be fighting to get back his medical license as well as clearing his name in these charges. At this point I don't have a great deal of information other than the complaint that has been filed. The government isn't obligated to turn that information over to me yet. I'm sure when they do, I'll have the opportunity to go over it with my client but as I said we'll be pleading not guilty,” said

The federal judge made it clear that he was “deadly serious” about Dehaan complying with the limits of his release and if he violates the terms in any way, he will be detained for the entire trial process.

Technically bail was $4,500 but that’s money Dehaan doesn’t actually have to pay. Also, his wife will act as his third party custodian, meaning she’s responsible for reporting any violations and if she doesn’t she can be held in contempt of court.

Dehaan is scheduled to be back in court on February 12th.

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- A local doctor finds himself in more hot water. Dr. Charles Dehaan is now in jail and faces up to a decade in prison for Medicare fraud. He's the same doctor who recently had his medical license suspended because of sexual abuse claims made by elderly patients.

According to the Department of Justice, Dehaan was arrested Friday night. Saturday morning in court he was ordered to stay in police custody.

A federal complaint says Dehaan submitted false claims to Medicare through his business House Call Physicians Group of Rockford.

Dehaan will be back in court on Tuesday.

If found guilty he faces up to 10 years in prison and hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines.
