ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The Washington Park Community Center in Rockford has been around since the 1950's and over the years the basketball court inside has been falling apart and in need of some TLC.
We got a sneak peek of the brand new gym Thursday morning before the big thank you ceremony for the Kiwanis Club of Rockford. The organization gave the Rockford Park District $75,000 this summer, to make repairs to the 41 year old court. Community Center Manager Nikki Lynch says the upgrade will give kids in the area a safe place to play.
"People that have been in the neighborhood are coming back and going holy cow it looks like a total new gym and it dose. Even the kids when they walk in their eyes .. they are going wow this is ours. Its been a huge blessing, a huge blessing that we are grateful for," Lynch said.
The total cost of the project was $150,000 which includes a new ventilation system and other upgrades to the gym. It was all covered by private donations.
