Dixon City Engineer Resigns Due to Credit Card Use

DIXON (WIFR) -- The latest Dixon city employee accused of defrauding taxpayers has resigned.

Dixon Mayor Jim Burke tells 23 News he received a letter of resignation from City Engineer Shawn Ortgiesen along with a check for just over $9,000. Ortgiesen allegedly racked up more than $13,000 in personal expenses on a city issued credit card dating back from April 2007 to last month. He already paid back nearly $5,000. Today's check was for the remaining balance including interest calculated at five percent.

"He said please accept my resignation from my position with the City of Dixon. I am truly sorry for breaking the trust of the council, all city employees, and the community. Serving the community has been an honor, and I am saddened to forfeit this opportunity," Burke said.

According to a FOIA a request obtained by SaukValley.com. It appears that there were either Mayor Burke's signature or initials by about half dozen credit card requisitions filed by Ortgiesen .

They show personal purchases with notations of Ortgiesen's intent to reimburse the city. When asked to respond Mayor Burke said that there is a lot more to this than what it seems on the surface he will be releasing a written response within the next couple days. But is withholding further comment until then.
