STATELINE (WIFR) – Exactly one year after Superstorm Sandy killed more than 100 people, local volunteers are preparing for future disasters.
First responders and local organizations that make up the Winnebago County Citizen Corp. Council have completed a program to help organize volunteers during an emergency. The United Way is taking the lead role when it comes to attracting and sending out people to help.
Volunteers can also assist with the recovery process, like the ones helping with Superstorm Sandy, by cleaning up homes and debris.
"When it's disaster time, everyone comes together and there's always a place for something, there's something to do for everybody. So there is no picture of a volunteer, the picture is in their heart, people want to help and this is a means to let people do that,” said Dina Getty, Chairwoman for Winn. Co. CCC.
