Delivering the Mail in Frigid Temperatures

By  |

STATELINE (WIFR) -- Several thousand mail carriers who make sure we receive our letters and packages everyday have shown their dedication to the job no matter what mother nature throws at them, including the blustering cold temperatures we’ve been seeing.

23 News tagged along with one mail carrier who is battling the elements.

“Nobody wants to be out in it and we know it’s a job that has to be done. We know, we agreed to, and we try to do it the best we can,” said mail carrier, Lori Lund.

As a mail carrier for four years, Lori Lund says she’s been through it all…thunderstorms, scorching heat, and now this arctic blast.

“I have 4 layers.”

Lori says it’s a job and that sometimes hard to explain to her kids.

“I go, it’s not safe you’re not going out, it’s too cold and the first words out of their mouths were ‘well why are you going out?’ and it’s like well it’s my job,” said Lori.

It’s not just the cold, Lori says it’s a struggle to walk down the street delivering mail to every doorstep of 500 homes and businesses.

“You feel like you’re mountain climbing sometimes.”

However, on days like this, Lori says it helps to have friendly and caring customers like Sandy Anderson.

“Well the garbage man got the day off and she didn’t so she needed to get warm.”

“She knocked on the door to give me a package and I said come in and I’ll get you a cup of hot chocolate.”

“I’ve got to know a lot of my customers, where they offer me coffee and hot chocolate, which is really an upside.”

Lori says the best relief will be warmer temperatures.

On dangerously cold days like this, most mail carriers start a little earlier. The weather does limit them, making it take longer to deliver the mail.
