ILLINOIS (WIFR) – If you tried to sign up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act this morning you probably didn’t get too far. That’s because the federal enrollment website was overloaded after just a few hours because there were too many users.
That’s the message millions of people received after spending hours trying to log onto the new health insurance website.
It’s a frustrating day for people like Ted Odenhal, an insurance agent who, like many, tried several times to log on to the government site. The page was supposed to be launched today, however, a technical problem delayed the country from signing up for coverage.
“People want to find out what their options are and understand what’s going to be available so they can plan,” Odenhal said.
Once the kinks are worked out, here’s how enrollment will work. Based on our household size and income, we’ll be re-directed to healthcare.gov where we’ll either create an account or apply for Medicaid. Experts say when choosing coverage, we should look at the benefits, co-payments, and cost of premiums. Every insurance plan will cover things like doctor and emergency room visits, hospital stays, and prescriptions.
“By what you fill in the document, they’re going to decide which 6 or 7 policies fit all the parameters that you put in and they’re going to let you compare those side by side.”
This is the first time anyone has seen the enrollment website. Many counselors say they’re still booking appointments, however they wanted to check out the site first before helping people. Now, they’ll have to wait until it’s up and running.
There are six insurance companies offering coverage online and will soon be only a click away.
There are ten local agencies to help you through the enrollment process. They are:
Illinois Health Insurance Marketplace
Winnebago County Health Department
Rockford Human Services Department
La Voz Latina
