UPDATE: Deadly Crash Shuts Down I-39

UPDATE: We are learning more details of what caused a fatal crash that stopped traffic on I-39 Monday during rush hour.

Illinois State Police say around 3 p.m. a semi-truck driver was going too fast and wasn't able to slow down in time.

It slammed into a car, pushing it into a ditch. A passenger, 74-year-old David Jones, died in the accident. The first car hit three more vehicles after that forcing them all over the southbound lanes. The truck driver, 55-year-old Jay Taylor has been cited for failing to reduce speed.


OGLE COUNTY (WIFR) -- A section of I-39 between Baxter Road and Route 72 is shut down as police investigate a deadly accident.

Police tell us one person is dead after an accident involving four cars and a semi. Illinois State Police are investigating. It’s not clear what the status of the other drivers are or what caused the accident.
