Crundwell's Defense Considers Motion

DIXON (WIFR) -- State charges against Rita Crundwell could get dropped as soon as next year. Her Lee County defense attorneys are considering filing a motion to do just that, but they say it won't be possible until after Dixon’s ousted comptroller is sentenced in federal court. Rita Crundwell already admitted to stealing more than $53 million from taxpayers over two decades to the feds.

State prosecutors have filed separate theft charges against her, but now those may constitute as double jeopardy. Lee County's Public Defender tells us he'll have to wait until after Crundwell's February sentencing to know for sure. He's asked Crundwell's judge to give him more time to weigh his options. Crundwell will be back in court tomorrow.
