Investigators tell us 20-year-old James Taylor and another man tried to rob the Mosy's Grocery and Liquor Store on West State Street at around midnight. But it didn't quite go as planned.
Police say one of the employees grabbed a revolver and fired shots at the suspects. Taylor was hit and is currently in serious condition. Detectives tell us the other man fled the scene. Three employees were in the store, none of which were injured in the shooting.
"I didn't think they were going to jump over the counter," said the employee who shot the suspect. He chose to be unidentified. "One of them did, and started shooting at me. So it was just like, shoot or get shot, you know?"
Surveillance video shows the exact moment the Mosy's Grocery and Liquor Store store employee said he felt his life was in danger. The worker said he grabbed a revolver when he saw two men wearing painter's masks creeping along the outside wall of the West State Street store just after midnight.
"Yeah it just happened like, there was no emotion to it really," he said. "It's just like everything happened slow and fast at the same time. I can't even explain it."
The employee said the two men came in shooting. That's when, he said, he fired back, hitting 20-year-old James Taylor, who he said he held until police arrived. Investigators say the other suspect fled the scene.
"I really didn't want to shoot the guy," he said. "It was like basic instinct. After he started shooting at me, I shot at him. You know, I don't want to get hit by a bullet."
"I don't want it to happen to anybody, I tell you the truth," said store owner Mohamad Alkabsh. "Anybody, I don't want it to happen to anybody else, any person or any human being. But when you try to defend yourself you're going to have to defend yourself. I think he did good. I think he did the right thing."
The owner said this is the first time in the seventeen years he's owned the store that anything like this has ever happened.
None of the three employees at the store were hurt in the shooting. The employee who shot the suspect said he has had ringing in his ears all day from the sound of gunfire, but he said he's lucky to be alive.
If you have any information on the where abouts of the second suspect please called the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department or Crimestoppers.
