ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- After years of fundraising, construction is finally underway for the Winnebago County 9/11 memorial.
Crews just started work on West State Street and Kilburn. The memorial will have two steel beams from the World Trade Center and will honor 9/11 victims and local first responders who were killed in the line of duty. Organizers expect to complete the memorial by September 2016 in time for the 15th anniversary.
Organizers have raised more than $200,000 so far. The goal is $500,000. The Party on the Rock benefit for the memorial will be Thursday, July 24th at the Verdi Club.
