Community Members Asked to Help Area Homeless Teens

STATELINE (WIFR) -- Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois will be working with Project 16:49 to host a backpack donation drive to benefit Rock County homeless youth. Community members are encouraged to donate items for the drive at Goodwill’s Retail Store/Donation Center located at 2543 Prairie Avenue in Beloit, WI from July 21 through July 27, 2013.

In August 2013, Goodwill will provide between 75-100 homeless unaccompanied teens with the items they need to help them begin and stay in school, as well as provide food and other supplies. Goodwill will also provide critical backpacks for the students, as most of their possessions are kept here.

Additionally, included in each backpack will be resource information and food gift cards from local establishments. Taco John’s, Pizza Hut, and others have generously contributed to this initiative.

“Currently there are over 500 homeless youth in the Beloit School District,” stated Courtney Geiger, Director of Mission Services at Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois. “Resources in the community and at the state level are quickly decreasing and Goodwill is proud to partner with Project 16:49 to benefit at least 75 youth with this program.”

Items needed for the donation drive include:
• New school supplies including spiral notebooks, pens and pencils, and folders
• Non-perishable, pop top food items including canned fruits and vegetables, canned soup, packaged nuts, and pasta
• Boxed drinks and juice
• Gallon-size ziplock bags
• Food gift cards
