JANESVILLE (WIFR) -- The Coins for Caring program at Blackhawk Technical College recently received a generous boost when two parties made contributions worth $15,000.

The gifts can be used during the spring semester of 2014 so that students in need of emergency assistance may receive up to $100 for the semester. Often, the aid allows students to stay in school while paying for items such as bus passes, gas, food, utilities, health care and program related expenses.

Coins for Caring received a private donation of $10,000 from Barbara Stauner that will be used over the next four school years at $2,500 per year. Ms. Stauner, of Rice Lake, WI, is a frequent contributor to scholarship and aid programs throughout the Wisconsin Technical College System.

The BTC Faculty Federation, another frequent contributor to student financial assistance, donated $5,000 to the program.

“The Coins for Caring program is essential to BTC,’’ said Kelli Cameron, BTC’s Director of the Blackhawk Technical College Foundation. “It provides key assistance to students faced with unexpected challenges and choices.

“With the generous support of Ms. Stauner and the BTC Faculty Federation, we can help students stay on the right path to achieve their educational and career goals.’’

In early February, 21 students received a total of $2,100 from the program. Last semester, 102 students received $9,833 in assistance.
