ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Rockford aldermen approve a more than $3 million funding plan to buy new trucks for the fire department.
Some of the current engines are from the late 70's and do not have basic equipment, such as ladders that extend and up to date seat belts.
Responders say they're grateful the council approved the purchase that will ultimately pay for 3 quints and an engine.
Fire fighters say they're in desperate need of the new vehicles.
Rockford Fire Dept. Chief Derek Bergsten says " We had a lot of break downs and rigs that were in need of repair so this is going to give us some new equipment that has all the safety features and is reliable and is going to be safe for firefighters to respond to calls and it will work for them"
The council also read in a new districting map that could change what alderman represents us. This is one of the first steps in the voting process.

This is not great news, the will not save much money. Tired of having tax payer pocket picked. Lee if you see insurance savings you know very littlde about what is going on here.
Great news! Surely the city will see a great saving by moving out these out of date and worn out apperatices. City's insurance costs should see a significant reduction also.
It is so wrong that we spent so much money on park walks and old buildings and let the fire department and police not have good equipment. Protecting the people and helping the homeless should come first!
