ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- To showcase Rockford’s history, a new interactive map of historic sites and districts in Rockford is now available on the City’s website. This new online tool will help increase public awareness of historic preservation and will grant citizens access to information on Rockford’s many historic sites.
The map identifies sites that are either on the National Register of Historic Places, or have been identified as locally designated landmarks. Users can select the type of sites they are looking for or focus the map on geographic areas of the city to see all sites in that location. By selecting a site, users can access pictures and historic site descriptions related to that location.
The Winnebago County GIS Consortium (WinGIS)has been a critical partner in the project’s success by providing web application development services. This project highlights the value of our partnership with the WinGIS organization. Through the collaborative efforts of City and WinGIS staff, this project makes geographic-based historic information easy for Rockford citizens to access to learn more about their community.
The map is available at http://rockfordil.gov/rockford-maps.aspx or by going to the City’s Historic Preservation website http://rockfordil.gov/community-economic-development/construction-development-services/historic-preservation.aspx and following links to the interactive map.
