Changes in Congress

Officials from the Big 3 Automakers testify in front of Congress.

ILLINOIS (WIFR) -- Our representation in Washington will be considerably more Democratic. The party won most of the big prizes in districts that were redrawn to squeeze republicans out or throw them into democrat-friendly territory.

Out of the 18 house races state wide, 12 went to democrats. In our area, that includes newly redrawn 17th District where Cheri Bustos defeated incumbent Bobby Schilling. In January, just 6 house seats will be held by Republicans. That's half as many as we've seen over the last two years. One of those six will be the 16th District's Adam Kinzinger. The incumbent congressman stopped by our studios this morning to talk about what comes next.

"It's actually a positive thing, you have two different members of congress from two different parties, that really have the interests of Rockford at heart. And so, I'm looking forward to working with Cheri and figuring out, what do we need to do to create the right environment for Rockford," Kinzinger said.

You can hear more of our extended interview with Congressman Kinzinger tonight on the 23 News at 6.
