Catholic Charities Gives Free Shoes to Refugees

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- A Rockford shoe store is helping dozens of refugees who just moved to the Stateline adjust to the winter weather.

The Catholic Charities teamed up with Payless Shoes in the Forest Plaza to hand out new pairs of free shoes and boots to nearly 20 kids who are refugees.

Janet Biljeskovic, Catholic Charities, says most of the families just moved to the Rockford area last month from places like Iraq, Afghanistan and Africa. Many of the kids were wearing flip flops.

"According to the season we are required to provide them with proper shoe-wear. So this one really came at a great time, it's winter, it's snow and for all of the families you are seeing this is the first time they are seeing snow," Biljeskovic said.

Catholic Charities also provides the families with a place to live, register kids for school and even doctor visits.
