Cashier Pistol Whipped During Armed Robbery at Rockford Family Dollar

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Police have reopened the streets surrounding a west side Family Dollar after officer says a worker was hit in the face with a gun during an armed robbery.

It happened Wednesday around 9:00 p.m. at the store on Auburn Road near Central Avenue. Investigators say a man walked into the business and demanded cash out of the register. Officers say the woman working behind the counter couldn't get the drawer to open, so the suspect hit her in the face with the gun and started to briefly struggle with her. Police wrapped up their search for the suspect around 10:00 p.m. in that area using a police dog. The suspect is still on the run.
