WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) -- There's a new sheriff in town.... It's a phrase that hasn't been uttered in Winnebago County for 15 years but Gary Caruana is hoping to change that.
Caruana was a Winnebago County Sheriff Deputy three decades ago before leaving in 1985. For more than 25 years he served as the security manager for the UPS Hub at RFD before retiring last year.
In 2005 Mayor Morrissey appointed Caruana to the Rockford Board of Fire and Police Commissioners. The Rockford republican feels all that experience makes him qualified to become Winnebago County's top cop.
"I felt like I had the ability to have that leadership to lead the team. And justcreate some good programs to combat our crime problem here in Winnebago County and Rockford Area. Right now we're a little fragmented. We have some silos. And we need to break down those silos and start working in unison together," Caruana said.
Caruana is the first candidate to officially throw his hat into the ring. Four term democrat Dick Myers is expected to announce re-election plans within the next few weeks.
