COLD CASE UPDATE: Franklin Lofton Sentenced for Murder

UPDATE: Franklin Lofton has been sentenced to serve life in prison for the murder of Tyrone Dowthard.

Lofton was found guilty of 3 counts of First Degree Murder with the additional allegation that he discharged a firearm which proximately caused Dowthard's death. The charges carry a sentence of 45 years to natural life in prison.

Lofton was also found guilty of attempted armed robbery which carries a sentence of 4-15 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Lofton was found guilty after a jury trial on November 6, 2012. He had been previously convicted of the 2007 murder or Wilber Harndin and is currently serving a 75 year sentence for that offense. The natural life sentence will run consecutive to the previously imposed sentence. Lofton will serve his entire sentence.

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- More than 6 years after his killing and 2 years after we featured his story in a cold case report. Justice is finally served for the killer of Tyrone Dowthard.

After six hours of deliberation a jury found Franklin Lofton guilty on three counts of murder and one count of attempted robbery. Lofton fatally shot Dowthard outside his sister's house in may of 2006. Lofton has already been in prison for the 2007 murder of Wilber Harnden. Lofton will receive mandatory life in prison when he is sentenced on December 14.
